In Chicago, the lonely architect Alex Wyler has a troubled relationship with his father Simon Wyler. In 2004, he buys an old glass house in a lake, designed and built by his father, and he finds a message in his mailbox from the former tenant, the also lonely Dr. Kate Forster, asking to deliver her correspondence in an address downtown. Alex meets his brother Henry in Chicago and when they go to the address with Dr. Forster’s correspondence, they find a building of luxury apartments under construction to be delivered eighteen months later. After some messages, Alex and Kate disclose that she is living in 2006 and Alex in 2004, they fall in love for each other and they try to find means to meet each other.

Determined to solve the mystery, the students head for ITC headquarters, where they are stunned to learn of Doniger’s new invention — a machine that can actually transmit three-dimensional objects through space. Although he meant for the device to revolutionize shipping, Doniger inadvertently opened a wormhole that leads directly to the 14th century, and Professor Johnston, who had insisted on experiencing the discovery himself, is now trapped in a vicious French vs. English feudal war! Dalton is an expert “cooler” — a barroom bouncer who can break up fights without getting himself killed in the process. Wesley is also responsible for a lot of the violence at the Double Deuce, and for some time, Wesley has had the sheriff in his pocket, giving him complete control of the town of Jasper. Wesley is out to get rid of Dalton, who has already made some friends in Jasper — Dalton has rented a room from a man named Emmet, and has befriended local auto parts store owner Red Webster, and has also befriended Pete Stroudenmire, the owner of Stroudenmire Ford, a local car dealership. Wesley, who wants money from these people, has his henchmen burn down Red’s store, run a big foot truck through the showroom of Pete’s dealership, and set Emmet’s home on fire. Dalton is pleasantly surprised when his mentor and old friend, legendary cooler Wade Garrett, arrives in town and helps him beat up the guys who are vandalizing Tilghman’s liquor shipment because Wesley wants to be the one to supply Tilghman’s liquor, and take money from Tilghman. A couple of days after Wade’s arrival, Wesley has Wade murdered in order to get a point across to Dalton. In retaliation, Dalton storms Wesley’s mansion, with every intention of freeing the town from Wesley.
